What is Hydro Electric Power Plant?
- A hydroelectric power plant consists of a high dam that is built across a large river to create a reservoir, and a station where the process of energy conversion to electricity takes place. A turbine is utilized which is rotated by the force of Flowing water, which in turn rotated the Generator. This results in production of Electricity.
- Hydropower is called renewable source of energy because it uses and not consumes the water for generation of electricity, and the hydropower leaves this vital resource available for other uses. Moreover, it doesn’t pollute the environment as it does not release any toxic pollutant in air.
Hydroelectric Potential of India
- Hydropower is one of the oldest and widely used renewable sources of energy.
- The hydropower potential of India is around 1,45,000 MW and at 60% load factor, it can meet the demand of around 85, 000 MW. Around 26% of Hydropower potential has been exploited in India.
- India is the 7th largest producer, with production of about 45,000 MW of hydroelectric power in the world and also ranks 3rd worldwide by its total number of dams.
- Various Hydroelectric Power projects are managed by Government under two different Ministries on the basis of Power Generation Capacity –
-
- Hydropower Station greater than 25 MW are managed by Ministry of Power (You can read Schemes and Programs related to Ministry of Power Here – Click Here)
- Hydropower Station less than 25 MW are managed by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (You can read Schemes and Programs related to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Here – Click Here)
