· A series of mountains which are more or less connected to each other and are ranged in a line is known as mountain range.
· India is home to 7 major mountain ranges that house various mountain peaks. The Major Mountain Ranges of India are –
1. Himalayan Ranges
2. Eastern Mountain Range/ Purvanchal Range
3. Satpura Ranges
4. Vindhyan Ranges
5. Aravalli Range
6. Western Ghats
7. Eastern Ghats
· These mountain ranges have several mountain peaks which rank highest in India. The mountains in the country are important for their ecological, social, and economic purposes.
· Most of these peaks are rich in flora and fauna. Many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are constructed amidst these peaks.

Interesting Facts
· The Himalayas range is one of the youngest mountain ranges in the world and consists of many of the highest peaks in the World.
· Major peaks of Himalaya Mountain are situated in the Karakoram ranges, Garhwal Himalaya and Kanchenjunga.
· Mount K2, also known as Godwin-Austen is the highest peak of India is located in Ladakh. It has an elevation of 8,611 m above sea level, situated in the north -eastern Karakoram Range. It is located in the Pakistan – administered territory of Gilgit – Baltistan.
· Saltoro Kangri lies along the Actual Ground Position Line between India and Pakistan on the Siachen Glacier, Ladakh (in administered Region).
· Kanchenjunga is the 2nd highest mountain peak in India, situated at an altitude of 8,586 m (28,169 ft). It is located at the border of Nepal and Sikkim (India). It is the 3rd highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,586 m above sea level.
· Kanchenjunga is called ‘five treasures of snow’ after its five peaks. Until 1852, Mount Kanchenjunga was considered as the highest peak in the world.
· Nanda Devi is the 3rd highest peak in India and the 23rd highest peak in the world, which is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and has an elevation of 7,816 m. Nanda Devi, which is located entirely within India.
