- Our country got independent on August 15, 1947 and our constitution was formed on January 26, 1950.
- India is multi-religious country. India has been divided in many states.
- India was divided on the basis of language, the first state was Andhra Pradesh.
- In present, there are 28 State and 8 Union Territories in our country. This article provides the List of Formation Date of 29 States and 7 Union Territories in India.
Formation of States in India
- The Indian political map in 1947 was quite different as compared to the existing one. During the British rule, India consist of provinces, which were directly under the rule of the British government and the princely states.
- Post India’s independence in 1947, there were 562 princely states. Between 1947 and 1950, all the princely states were incorporated within the Indian Union. Many of the former princely states were either made new states or were attached with existing provinces of the country.
- Later, with the States Reorganization Act of 1956, Indian states were organised on a linguistic basis. Hence, it becomes important to know which states were formed when.
- India comprises of a total of 37 States and Union territories. This includes constitutional changes brought about by the Government of India in August 2019.
- On October 31, 2019, the state of Jammu and Kashmir ceases to exist and two new Union Territories – UT of Jammu and Kashmir and UT of Ladakh – came into existence, making it a total of 28 States and 8 Union Territories.

Interesting Facts about States and Union Territories of India
- Now J&K has been divided into two parts one is Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and other is Union Territory of Laddakh. J&K became part of Indian Territory when its ruler Maharaja Hari Singh accepted the sovereignty of India on 26 Oct, 1947.
- After Independence, Indian Army attacked Goa including Panaji and uprooted the Portuguese controls in 1961. Thereafter, Goa was merged with India as a Union Territory. It was declared as a state of India in 1987 along with Panaji as the capital of Goa. It is India’s smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population. Goa is India’s richest state. It was established on 30 may, 1987.
- Union Territories of Daman & Diu, for over 450 years, the coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Daman and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on December 19, 1961, by military conquest.
- Dadra & Nagar Haveli were liberated in 1954 from the Portuguese. Nagar Haveli is lodged between Maharashtra and Gujarat, whereas Dadra is an enclave 1 km NW, surrounded by Gujarat. The shared capital is Silvassa. It came into existence on 11 Aug. 1961.
- Puducherry along with Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, was transferred to India in 1954 by the French. Union Territory of Puducherry formerly known as Pondicherry. It was formed out of four exclaves of former French India namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. It is named after the largest district Puducherry. The territory changed its official name to Puducherry on 20 September 2006. it was formed on 1st November 1966.
- Sikkim became a part of India in 1974.
- National Capital Territory of Delhi is the capital city of India. It the second most populated city and second most populated urban cluster in India and 3rd largest urban area in the world.
- Chhattisgarh was formed on 1 November 2000 by partitioning 16 Chhattisgarhi-speaking southeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh.
- Uttarakhand was formed on 9th November 2000 as the 27th State of India, when it was carved out of northern Uttar Pradesh. It is located at the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
- Jharkhand is a state in eastern India carved out of the southern part of Bihar on 15 November 2000.
- In 1960, the Indian state of Bombay was split into two states, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The city of Mumbai was given to Maharashtra, leaving Gujarat without a capital city. At that time, Ahmedabad was selected to be the first capital of the newly created state.
- In 2017, Dharamsala was declared as HP’s winter capital, which means it’ll have two capital cities i.e. Shimla and Dharamshala. Dharamshala is also the hometown of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
- Chandigarh as a Union Territory was constituted on November 1, 1966, when the Indian Punjab was reorganised along linguistic lines into two new states- Haryana and Punjab. Connected between Haryana and Punjab, the city of Chandigarh was made the collective capital of the two states and of the Union Territory itself.
