What is Dam?
A dam is a barrier constructed to hold back water and raise its level, forming a reservoir which is used to generate electricity or as a water supply. This form of electricity generated by water is known as hydroelectricity.
Major Dams in India
- Hailed as the “Temples of Resurgent India” by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s dams help provide water and electricity to millions citizens.
- India has 5,202 large dams including the famous and not-so-famous dams.
- According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), a large dam is one with height of at least 15m from its deepest foundation to the crest.
