Kandla Port, Gujarat

    • Kandla port was built after partition as the Karachi port on western coast had gone to Pakistan.
    • It is known for handling major part of the crude oil imports of India.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Maharashtra

    • Also known as Nhava Sheva
    • It is largest container port in India, handling around half of containers of all major ports.
    • It is located on eastern shore of Mumbai harbour off Elephanta Island and is accessed via Thane creek.

Mumbai Port, Maharashtra

    • It is the largest port in India. It is a natural harbour and is 10-12 metre deep.
    • It handles around one-fifth of India’s foreign trade.

Visakhapatnam Port, Andhra Pradesh

    • Lord Willingdon inaugurated the Visakhapatnam port on December 19, 1933.
    • The port is located on a creek where the Narava Gedda joins the sea.

Chennai Port, Tamil Nadu

    • It is the third oldest port in India that started its operations in 1881.
    • It is second largest port of India.
    • It is largest port at east coast. It lies on the Coromandel Coast in the Bay of Bengal.

    • The Port Blair port is the youngest major sea port in India declared in 2010.
    • The port is of strategic importance to India and is closer to two international shipping lines viz. Saudi Arabia-Singapore and US-Singapore.

Kolkata Port

    • Only riverine major port in India. Also known as the ‘Gateway of Eastern India’.
    • Known for twin dock systems – Kolkata Dock System (KDS) on the eastern bank and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) on the western bank of river Hooghly.
    • It is one of the largest dry docks of India and also the oldest port that was made by the East India Company.

Paradip Port, Orissa

    • Located at confluence of river Mahanadi in Bay of Bengal in Odisha.
    • It was the first major port on East Coast commissioned in independent India.

Tuticorin Port, Tamil Nadu

    • It is located in the Gulf of Mannar.
    • It is an artificial harbour developed 8kms south of the old Tuticorin port.

Cochin Port, Kochi (Kerala)

    • The Cochin port lies in between two islands, namely Willingdon and Vallarpadam on the South-West coast of India, located on the cross roads of the East-West Ocean trade.
    • The port is called natural gateway to the vast industrial and agricultural produce markets of the South-West India.

Ennore Port, Chennai

    • This port is now named as Kamarajar Port Limited.
    • It is first corporate port of India and is registered as a public company with 68% stake held by government.

New Mangalore, Karnataka

    • It is situated at the Gurupura river confluence with Arabian Sea.
    • Also known as Panambur Port, is a deepwater, all-weather port.
