  • As per AAI data from Nov 2016, following are being targeted for the scheduled commercial flight operations under UDAN-RCS, including the following:
    1. 486 total airports, airstrips, flying schools and military bases are available in the country.
    2. 123 airports with scheduled commercial flights including some with dual civilian and army use.
    3. 34 international airports

Airport Authority of India

  • The Organization is entrusted with the responsibility of creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing civil aviation infrastructure both on the ground and air space in the country.
  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) manages a total of 137 Airports,which includes 23 International Airports, 104 Domestic Airports and 10 Customs Airports including 30 Civil Enclaves at Defence Airfields. 100 airports/aerodromes receive regular commercial flights.
  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) which is under Ministry of Civil Aviation, also provides Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) over whole Indian Air Space and adjacent oceanic areas with ground installations at all Airports and 25 other locations to safeguard Aircraft operations.
  • The Functions of AAI includes –
    1. Design, Development, Operation and Maintenance of international and domestic airports and civil enclaves.
    2. Construction, Modification and Management of Passenger and Commercial Terminals of Airports.
    3. Provision of passenger facilities and information system at the passenger terminals at airports.
    4. Provision of Communication and Navigation aids, viz. ILS, DVOR, DME, Radar etc.
    5. Control and Management of the Indian airspace extending beyond the territorial limits of the country, as accepted by ICAO.

  • In India, there are 34 International Airports in India. International Airports are those airports which provide international connectivity and generally have more facilities than Domestic Airports.
  • Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (JRD) Tata is known as Father of Indian Aviation. In 1929, he became the first person in the country to be issued with a pilot’s license.
  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is the largest International Airports in India constructed in 5,495 acres.
  • It is the busiest airport in India.
  • Half of the Air traffic in India has been taken by the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai.
  • Maharashtra state having a large number of airport compared to other states. Maharashtra having 9 operational airports in India.
  • Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the only states having 3 International Airports in India.
  • Cochin International Airport is India’s 1st airport developed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
  • Juhu Aerodrome is the first airport in India founded in 1928 at Mumbai. It is India’s oldest airport.
  • Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Ladakh is the most beautiful airport in India. It is one of the highest Commercial airports in the world at 3,256m.
  • Lengpui Airport, Mizoram is India’s smallest airport.
  • The Subhash Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata was initially called ‘Dum Dum Airport’, until it was renamed after India’s freedom fighter.
  • The Trichy Airport has the shortest runway among the International Airports, spreading 816 feet.
