What is Museum?

· A museum is an establishment that maintains or conserves a collection of artefacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance.

· The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display objects of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public.

· The statutes of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), adopted in 1970, define a museum as –

“A non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.”

· In India, the Indian Museum in Kolkata, is the oldest and the largest museum of the country. It was established in the year 1814. In this article we have provided List of Museums in India below.

Types of Museums

Museums can be divided into following categories:

1. Fine Arts Museums – They contain all types of paintings, drawings, sculpture, architecture etc.

2. Historical Museums – These museums illustrate historical events or period, personalities etc. They have weapons, statues, artefacts made of stones and other material.

3. Science and Technology Museums – It contains all the things which are representative of the evolution of history, science, and technology such as fossils of dinosaurs.

4. Museum-house Museums – It is located in the birthplace of a famous person such as Sabarmati ashram, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s home, Tipu Sultan palace etc.

5. Archaeological Museums – It contains all the objects related to history.

6. General Museums – They contain more than one subject and therefore these museums are called multidisciplinary museums.

Importance of Museum

· The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display objects of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public.

· Museums collect and preserve our objects and materials of religious, cultural and historical value.

· They are a good source of entertainment and knowledge.

· These museums help to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.

· They are a storehouse of old artefacts, sculptures, objects, history etc.

· Museums help in research and study of history as well as other subjects with the help of various artefacts.

· They are the main attraction for tourist.
